Bala
Sunkrish
Bala is a young actor to watch as one of the stars
of the new
ABC primetime
comedy,
NOTES FROM THE UNDERBELLY about a
group of friends who are experiencing the
adventures of parenthood for the first time. In the
role of Eric, a conservative father-to-be, Bala is
hysterically funny as he strives a little too hard
to be a “super perfect parent”. NOTES FROM THE
UNDERBELLY debuted to high ratings this past year
and was held over as a mid-season replacement. The
show will begin airing two episodes at the end of
November and continue in its regular time slot in
January.
A graduate of UCLA, Bala started working on his television career while attending college. He quickly garnered guest starring roles on such hit shows as GREY’S ANATOMY, MY NAME IS EARL, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI:NY, HUFF and WILL & GRACE. Fans of the Showtime series, BARBERSHOP will remember him from his recurring role as Bashir.
Of Indian decent, Bala recently starred opposite Indian screen legend, Anupam Kher and Dee Wallace in the feature film, AMERICAN BLEND. Bala plays a young man who is having difficulty juggling the conservative culture of his Indian father and the more liberal American culture where he resides. He also recently wrapped production on the indie horror feature, ALBINO FARM. Bala stars as a college student who comes face to face with a community of cave-dwelling genetic mutations while exploring the Ozark Mountains. Both films will be released in 2008.
A resident of San Jose, California, Bala spent much of his childhood in his native India where his father often traveled for work. The acting bug bit him at a young age when at six, he signed up for a play at a local community theater. As he continued to mature as a stage actor, Bala realized that his East Indian ethnicity was a limiting factor in the casting process. As a result, while still in high school, Bala along with other Bay Area South Asians co-created a non-profit theater company, A’Shore (“Noise” in Hindi) dedicated to finding and developing theatrical work with a South Asian perspective. He continued working with the Company from 2000-2003 before relocating to Los Angeles. In L.A., Bala soon landed a starring role at the prestigious East West Players in a production of AS VISHNU DREAMS.
Bala continues working in television, film and theater. In his spare time, he writes, plays tennis and travels as much as his busy NOTES FROM THE UNDERBELLY schedule will allow. Sunkrish Bala is certainly a rising star and a young actor with a big future in Hollywood!
